make art from science

exploring cymatics and harmonography

~ the art of making sound waves visible ~

Cymatics

Participants study the effect of sound - usually a sustained single note of specific pitch - on various materials using unusual scientific instruments. The emergent wave patterns can be used to create stunning visual images

Harmonography
Participants explore the visual effect of two sounds played together using a string pendulum or a drawing machine called a harmonograph. But instead of sounds, pendulums swinging at different rates an make musical harmony visual via complex and beautiful patterns
